Ingredients:
- 1 cup of freshly brewed, piping hot coffee (go for that top-notch medium roast; our Lifeblood from Chiapas is perfect for it)
- 1 tablespoon of brown sugar -adjust according to your sweet tooth!
- 1 ½ oz (45ml) of your favorite Irish whiskey
- Lightly whipped heavy cream
- Freshly grated nutmeg or ground cinnamon
How do you grind coffee for Irish Coffee?
There are many options, but you can use a medium or fine grind for better results.
If you use a regular coffee brewer, we recommend brewing a strong batch with medium grind coffee and using double the amount you usually use to prepare your coffee cup.
For example, if you use 20 grams per 250ml, you can use 40 grams to get a good brew where you can use other ingredients, as in this case.
If you have an espresso machine, you can easily pull a double espresso shot to make this drink; in this scenario, you will need a fine grind, of course.
Preparation:
- Brew your filtered coffee. Hot and fresh is the name of the game.
- Preheat your chosen vessel (think heat-resistant glass or clear mug for the traditional presentation) by giving it a little rinse with boiling water, then dispose of it.
- Drop that brown sugar into your preheated cup.
- Pour that steaming hot coffee over the sugar and give it a good stir until the sweetness melts right in.
- Now, add the star of the show: Irish whiskey. Stir gently to blend it all together.
- Time to create that iconic cream layer! Carefully pour your lightly whipped heavy cream over the back of a spoon, so it gracefully floats atop your coffee concoction.
- Feeling fancy? Sprinkle some freshly grated nutmeg or ground cinnamon on top for that extra flourish.
- Serve up your masterpiece pronto and savor every sip while it's still piping hot.
Tips to Elevate Your Experience:
- Opt for a medium roast coffee like our Lifeblood from Chiapas for a flavor explosion that'll knock your socks off.
- If you don't have time to whip the cream from scratch, you can buy pre-made whipped cream at the grocery store. However, if you prefer to make it yourself, we recommend using Dream Whip, which can last for several days in the fridge.
- Tweak the sugar and whiskey amounts to match your personal taste buds' preferences.
- When whipping that cream, aim for a thickness that's pourable yet luxurious. You want it to float effortlessly on your coffee.
- Some good dessert pairings are apple pie, cinnamon crumb cake and japanese cheesecake.
- Remember, Irish coffee is best enjoyed fresh off the press. No time for dilly-dallying!
